open access, libraries + dh

While vacillating between a sense of hope and dread as I considered the amount of energy it would take to transition a conference paper to a full article, I started building a list in my head of the various open access publishing outlets I might seek out that straddle the line between libraries and Digital Humanities. Foundering, I issued a clarion call on Twitter and the DH Slack to expand that list and the below resulted.

Overall I think it’s a good start. Would welcome further suggestions in the comments. Non-English, non-U.S./CAN suggestions highly encouraged.

We are furthermore particularly interested in their dialogue. Each issue of this journal will focus upon a particular question or theme that we will announce in due time in a call for papers, however they will all be connected to the axial questions of the various ways in which we can analyse, understand and explain the individual and collective forms of creating and feeling part of society and its cultural processes from a relational perspective, focussing on the relational bonds which we weave between one another and which establish us within our society, as members in a specific place.

Parameters: Knowledge Under Digital Conditions [forum]

Welcome to Parameters, an online forum from the Council’s Digital Culture program meant to address a complex, persistent question at the heart of social science research: how does (and, ultimately, should) the production and distribution of knowledge change under digital conditions? Parameters is intended to showcase wide-ranging, even conflicting perspectives on this issue, amplifying voices of scholars and researchers, teachers and publishers, librarians and archivists, as they reflect on how their work changes—and doesn’t change—even as the modes through which knowledge is collected, shared, analyzed, and interpreted continue to be informed and influenced by computational methods, platforms, and tools. At the same time, this space is meant to offer opportunities to reflect on, appreciate, and—perhaps most importantly—critique the digital conditions under which scholarship now operates.

  1. Hi there,

Have you spent much time browsing through doaj.org? It’s a pretty good resource when looking for Open Access journals.

  2. It would be useful if you could enhance this survey by adding information about what sort of outputs these outlets cater for. Are they all for traditional text publications, or do any of them allow enhanced publication, or data publication?

    1. Hi Martin, great suggestions. Will definitely take these into account as this effort is transitioned out of the blog to a larger, multilingual effort.
